Flow yoga or Vinyasa yoga as it is also known as is a type of yoga that focuses on the flow of one yoga posture to another smoothly with the natural inhale and exhale of the body. Visyasa is loosely translated to mean breath-synchronized movements, and a yoga class of this type will usually involve a calming series of yoga postures that are seamlessly performed one after another, thereby giving it the more popular name, Yoga Flow.
There are a number of popular yoga flow series, with the sun salutation being perhaps the most commonly heard of, and practiced.
There are a number of other predetermined yoga flow series that have been practiced for hundreds, even thousands of years, but the ability to create your own series can be just as beneficial, especially if you have been practicing for a number of years.
It differs from more traditional yoga classes and practices in that it is more about the movement and the connection that this movement can offer you in mental clarity than simply just stretching. In some cases flow yoga classes may also include chanting to further aid in establishing this connection. It is also common that mediation, both before and after the performance of the physical postures is practiced to further aid in this process. Like all yoga classes, it is important to find a teacher whose style you like. This is especially important with classes that may move more quickly than others, such as flow classes.
