Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini yoga is a form of yoga that focuses on the mind-body connection. Kundalini yoga is one of the many popular types of yoga practiced today. Most commonly Kundalini refers to the a serpent-like energy that exists wihin us and that once released can lead to a euphoric and harmonious state within the universe. It is said to lead to a clearer more focused mind and a healthier body.

Kundalini yoga was originally a form of yoga that was intended for stress relief and that could allow the average person to better cope with daily life pressures. It wasn’t until the late 60’s that this foryogaasanam of yoga was popularized in the West. It is based on the concept of chakras which when harnessed through postures and meditation can connect the yogi with the powerful force of prana (or the vital energy of the universe). It has been shown to have a number of both physical and mental benefits addressing ailments such as addictions, Alzheimer’s, asthma and stress related disorders.

A Kundalini yoga class will focus on a balance between the mind and body and its connection with the greater forces of the universe. It is a more spiritually-focused yoga style and a typical class will include meditation and breathing exercises as well as postures. The class typically ends with an extended period of meditation where the focus is on connecting oneself to the greater universe around them and in gaining a greater understanding of both the power within ourselves as well as of the universe. It is certainly a great yoga style to take up if you are looking for both physical and mental rewards from your yoga practice.
