Each part of the yoga experience is an opportunity to develop awareness.

Instead of going in and out of the postures, move in and out of them with the same sort of energy and focus that you have when you hold the them. This total involvement of the mind and body provides integration, awareness and union.

During movement, consciously engage your nervous system, which is where the body gets the orders to make movements. When you are working in a yoga posture, you are training your nervous system to activate and stimulate; in calming and relaxation postures and techniques, you are training your nervous system to relax at will.

Having the ability to work with your body’s energies allows you more freedom in life. If you can direct energy to where it is needed you will find the balance between the two energies of action and relaxation.

We can work with the energy of the breath in the same way. Attaining a deep, full breathing rhythm is one of the most beneficial lessons of yoga. We can spend days and months without food and even water but without the breath we would die within moments.

Pranayama is the yogic art of breathing or cultivating energy (prana = energy or life force; ayama = to develop or practice). Having breath awareness and staying focused on the breath in the postures allows us to develop a deeper understanding of how ‘to be’ in the postures (asana literally means ‘to be’), and in this way we learn when to activate and when to just relax.
